Gdansk Old Town: Guided Walk, Golf Cart or On Your Own?
4 min read
For a first visit, the guided walk is the best default: it covers the Royal Route in about 2.5 hours and costs €24.99 per person, while a golf cart gets you across more of the city with less walking. You can also walk it alone, so the real question is what a guide adds.
What the Old Town covers
The classic sights are the Golden Gate and Long Market with Neptune’s Fountain, St. Mary’s Church, and the medieval crane on the Motława waterfront. The walking tour in English lists all of these, plus the story of how the Second World War began in the city and how Solidarity grew here.
The guided walk
The English-language walk (€24.99, rated 4.8/5 from 1,235 reviews) lasts 2.5 hours and starts at the Golden Gate, Długa 1. The booking page gives the group size as up to 40 people and says it runs rain or shine. It also says you join the general tour, and that you can contact the operator after booking if you would prefer a smaller private one. The booking page marks it as wheelchair accessible. The German-language version from the same operator also lasts 2.5 hours and starts at the Golden Gate; its page lists the High Gate, the Town Hall and Artus Court among the stops. It costs €24.99.
The golf cart tours
Golf carts are the easy option for tired legs or a short stay. The shared or private Old Town and shipyard tour lasts 1 to 2 hours, is offered with guides in Polish, English and German, and has heated carts with a rain and wind cover. The listing shows a price from €3.41 per person; what you pay depends on the shared or private option you select, so check it before you compare it with the walk.
The Pańska 1 departure (from €3.41) starts in the Old Town, passes the Highland Gate, Golden Gate, St. Mary’s, the crane, Solidarity Square and the shipyard, and lists a private-group option. The live-guided buggy tour (from €6.82) meets near Neptune’s Fountain. Its booking page says that from 1 July to 25 August the route changes because of St. Dominic’s Fair, with the same schedule and length. It adds that pick-up is not offered at the ports.
A private guide
The private Old Town walk (from €82.98 per person) starts at the Highland Gate and comes in 2, 3, 4 and 6-hour versions. The 4- and 6-hour versions add St. Bridget’s Church, and the 6-hour option adds the European Solidarity Centre with a skip-the-line ticket. Guides work in nine languages, including Swedish and Italian. The page says Old Town pick-up is possible if your accommodation is within 1.5 km of the meeting point.
| Option | Format | Length | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guided walk, English | Group, up to 40 | 2.5 hours | Golden Gate |
| Golf cart, Old Town and shipyard | Shared or private | 1–2 hours | Depends on the option |
| Private walk | Private | 2–6 hours | Highland Gate |
On your own
Walking it alone costs nothing. You lose the stories and the order: the guides on these pages tie the buildings to the city’s history, including how the Second World War began here and how Solidarity grew. If you go alone, follow the route the walking tour describes, from the Golden Gate along Długa to Long Market and down to the waterfront.
Our recommendation
Take the guided walk if you can manage 2.5 hours on your feet, and a golf cart if you cannot or have only an hour. Choose the private walk only if you want a set pace or a longer route. All the options are listed under walking tours and golf cart tours.
