Malbork Castle from Gdansk: Group Tour, Private Trip or Train?
4 min read
Between October and late April the Historical Castle Route at Malbork has its last entry at 12:45, so a morning start matters more than the type of tour you choose. The castle’s website lists the autumn-winter season as 1 October 2026 to 25 April 2027, with the Historical Route open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 and interiors and exhibitions closing at 15:00.
The castle’s own rules
The same official page says the Castle Grounds Route has a last entry at 14:30 and is open from 13:00 to 16:00. On Mondays only the Castle Grounds Route is open. Admission is free that day, and the free ticket is available only at the ticket office on site. The museum is closed on 1 November, 24 December and 25 December, and it is open from 9:00 to 16:00 on 11 November and 26 December. On 31 December only the Castle Grounds Route is open, from 9:00 to 14:30 with last entry at 13:00. Check the castle’s website for the season you travel in, and for current ticket prices, which we do not quote.
Group tours with pickup
The half-day tour with audio guide takes 5 hours and costs €89.52, rated 4.7/5 from 299 reviews. It includes hotel pickup in Gdansk, an English-speaking driver, an audio guide in ten languages including Italian and Czech, and the entry fees. The page lists wheelchair users as not suitable. Check the booking page for extras such as food, drinks, tips and the castle tower.
The regular tour with a live guide costs €104.48, also takes 5 hours and has a live guide in English or German. It starts with hotel pickup in an air-conditioned minibus and covers the Palace of the Grand Master and St. Mary’s Church. Both tours come from the same operator and run as group trips.
Private trips
The private half-day trip takes 6 hours for groups of up to 15 and costs €149 per person. It includes pickup, an audio guide and entry including the “History of Amber” exhibition in the castle cellars; the page lists people with mobility impairments as not suitable, and you choose the language when booking.
The private day trip by car lasts 6 to 10 hours and costs €228.54. It adds pickup from Gdansk, Gdynia or Sopot, and an audio guide for sightseeing at your own pace. The skip-the-line tickets bypass the ticket office but not the queue for security and entry. The 10-hour option also visits the castles in Sztum and Kwidzyn.
| Option | Format | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Half-day tour with audio guide | Group, pickup | 5 hours |
| Regular tour with live guide | Group, pickup | 5 hours |

Going by train
Trains run from Gdańsk Główny to Malbork, and the train is the way to go if you want to buy your own ticket and set your own timetable. We have no official timetable to quote: journey times depend on the type of train, so check the operator’s timetable and plan to arrive well before the 12:45 last entry. The trade-off is that you carry out the planning and the ticket yourself, which the tours above do for you.
Our recommendation
For most visitors the half-day tour with audio guide is the simplest option: transport, entry and commentary in one booking. The private trips make sense for a group that wants its own pace or a longer route. All the options are under day trips.
