Amber in Gdansk: Museum Visit, Jewellery Workshop or a Walk with an Amber Craftsman?
4 min read
If you want to make something yourself, the two-hour amber jewellery workshop is the clearest choice: you leave with a pendant or bracelet you made, from €136.38 per person, rated 4.7/5 from 9 reviews. The Amber Museum says that Gdansk deserves the title of world capital of amber. The three offers below get you close to it in three very different ways.
The workshop
At the jewellery workshop with amber you make a pendant or a bracelet from amber, silver, beads or dried flowers; the page also mentions leather, resin and stones. It lasts 2 hours, takes up to 14 people and has an instructor who speaks English or Polish. All materials, the instructor’s guidance and the finished piece are included, and the piece can be adjusted to fit your neck or wrist. The meeting point is Nowiec 75, in the Brętowo district about 5 km west of the Old Town in a straight line, not in the centre; the page asks you to arrive 10 minutes early. It is the only one of the three where you make something yourself.
The museum, with an Old Town walk
The private tour of the Old Town and the Amber Museum costs €112.35 per person and lasts 2 hours. The meeting point is the High Gate, Wały Jagiellońskie 2A. The route passes the Long Market, St. Mary’s Basilica and Artus Court before the museum, and the page includes the museum entrance fee. It lists guides in nine languages.
One number is worth knowing. The Amber Museum, which is in the Great Mill at Wielkie Młyny 16, says on its official page that visiting takes not less than 2 hours. A tour that covers the Old Town and the museum in 2 hours in total can only give you the highlights inside. If the museum is what you came for, go on your own. According to the same page it opens at 10:00 and closes at 18:00 and is closed on Tuesdays and on some public holidays; tickets can be bought up to 60 minutes before closing. For 2026 it lists these closed days: 1 and 6 January, 4 to 6 April, 4 June, 1 November, 24 to 26 December and 31 December. On Mondays admission is free.
The walk to a family atelier
The amber trail with a craftsman costs €76.50 per person and is a private tour for up to 6 people. The guide is described as a third-generation amber craftsman, and the tour includes a visit to his family’s working atelier and a hands-on session with raw and polished Baltic amber. The page says you will learn to tell real Baltic amber from imitations. The page gives the duration as 2 to 6 hours at the top and as about 2.5 hours in the details; walking is on cobblestones, and the atelier is up one flight of stairs with no lift, so the page rules it out for wheelchair users. Entry fees to paid museums, food, drinks, hotel pickup and tips are not included, and amber is on sale at the atelier but optional. At the top the page lists guides in English, Spanish, Italian, Polish and French, but further down it says the session is held in English, with Polish on request at booking. Children aged 10 and over are welcome with an adult, and the meeting point is Neptune’s Fountain on the Long Market.
| Option | Length | Group | Meeting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jewellery workshop | 2 hours | Up to 14 | Nowiec 75 |
| Old Town and Amber Museum | 2 hours | Private | High Gate |
| Amber trail with a craftsman | About 2.5 hours | Up to 6 | Neptune’s Fountain |
Our recommendation
For most visitors the jewellery workshop is the easiest to judge: you know the length, the group size and what you take home. If you prefer to look and learn, book the walk with the craftsman and see the museum on its own. One more option sits in another article: the 8-hour private Tri-City tour lists a demonstration of amber polishing. For more choices, see tickets, museums and workshops.
